One thing I love about china are the armies of small business men and women who make their living peddling their wares from the back of their bicycles, Zi xing che xiao fan - literal translation is small bike peddler.
You see them first thing in the morning biking to their pitches and setting up for the day. They are not licensed, they don't have official pitches, they are just enterprising people trying to make their way in life.
They sell pretty much anything from the back of the bikes - DVD's , crockery, goldfish, wicker chairs , household items and plants and flowers to name a few.
The plants and flowers are very cheap in China...but don't expect them to last long!
The produce sold off the carts is mostly seasonal and comes direct from farms and wholesale markets, which kind of implies that it is somewhat healthy. This maybe the case but last year we had the curious phenomenon of exploding watermelons after farmers we applying forchiorfenuron, a growth accelerator, to their crops.
Do we buy it? Occasionally yes ..we just make sure we wash it first before we use it...twice!
